An unidentified flying object (UFO), also called a flying saucer, is any apparent anomaly in the sky that cannot be identified as a known object or phenomenon. In alleged sightings of UFOs, they are very often linked to extraterrestrial life, and it is speculated that UFOs are used as a common method of transportation for extraterrestrials. The first alleged photo of a UFO was taken in 1870, at Mount Washington in New Hampshire.
UFOs are generally described as being disc-shaped objects that travel at speeds unlike any normal airplane or helicopter, sometimes able to appear and disappear in the blink of an eye. UFOs are also involved in nearly every report of an alleged alien abduction. It has also been speculated that UFOs are responsible for the crop circle phenomenon.
UFOs are often associated with the top secret military base Area 51, with many visitors reporting sightings of alleged UFOs or other strange lights in the sky. Some of these sightings have been debunked as normal aircraft tested at the base, such as the SR-71 Blackbird, an airplane model that resembles a flying saucer when viewed from the front. However, most true believers and ufologists still enormously believe that the Area 51 base contains the remains of extraterrestrial spacecraft.
Descriptions of UFOs
While most eyewitnesses to alleged UFO sightings describe these spacecraft as being disc-shaped, a good number of other sightings have described objects resembling the following.
- Saucer-shaped spacecraft with a row of lights around it, thus forming the shape of a circle when viewed from the top.
- Triangle-shaped spacecraft with three notable lights on the bottom.
- Sphere-shaped spacecraft that glow all around.
- Spacecraft flat on the top and bottom, with windows making up the entire side walls, thus allowing the craft's occupants to be seen.
- Cigar-shaped spacecraft.
